STATEMENT OF NEED

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) alterations are recognized as actionable therapeutic targets in advanced non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Comprehensive molecular testing with broad-panel next-generation sequencing (NGS) is essential in all patients to identify HER2 alterations and inform treatment selection. The evolving treatment landscape includes highly selective oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as zongertinib, and intravenous antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), such as trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) (NCCN, 2026). Oncology nurses play a central role in coordinating timely biomarker testing, educating patients about treatment options, supporting adherence to oral therapies, monitoring for and managing adverse events, and addressing patient concerns throughout treatment. A comprehensive understanding of HER2-mutant NSCLC is therefore crucial for oncology nurses to help optimize therapeutic efficacy, promote patient safety, and improve the overall treatment experience (Sun et al, 2025). This symposium at the GLAONS 10th Annual Oncology Care Summit will provide expert guidance on the nursing management of patients with HER2-mutant NSCLC, featuring perspectives from Nikka Berkowitz, AGACNP-BC, OCN®, Oncology Nurse Practitioner at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Karen Reckamp, MD, FASCO, Director of the Division of Medical Oncology, Associate Director of Clinical Research, and Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Health Sciences University.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is designed for oncology nurses, oncology nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers (HCPs) involved in the management of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Describe the role of HER2 alterations in NSCLC and the distinctions among HER2 mutation, amplification, and overexpression.

• Differentiate HER2-targeted therapy classes by mechanism, administration, and toxicity patterns relevant to nursing care of patients with NSCLC

• Assess patient-specific factors to support personalized treatment planning in HER2-mutant NSCLC

• Implement practical nursing strategies to improve testing coordination, symptom monitoring, and patient adherence for individuals with HER2-mutant NSCLC within one’s practice setting
